What are These New Realities and What Happened to the Old One?
The new realities keynote touches on augmented reality (AR), virtual reality, 3D printing, mouse-free interaction technologies, and some others. All of these are in schools or homes now, and schools have already been moving in that direction with great benefits for students. Particularly with AR, schools are already building yearbooks, art exhibits, and community nights with them. 3D printing is absolutely on many agendas and will grow into more, including math.

Animatronics: An Engineering + Creative Writing Experience for High Schoolers
Come learn about a new arts and engineering program in which high school students conceive and create a complete, original robotic show. A goal of the animatronics program is to provide a deep cross-disciplinary experience, teaching students how to think creatively across traditional areas of expertise.
Inspired by the use of animatronics to create popular attractions at theme parks, an interdisciplinary team of adult teachers and mentors are creating hands-on workshop experiences in which teens write an original script to be performed by puppets brought to life by the use of electro mechanics. All students participate fully in both creative writing and engineering components. Faculty in creative writing, in theater and in engineering provide instruction to teach how to develop character, write dialogue, create sets, use tools to build aluminum frames for puppets, wire electronic components, record voice performances and record synchronized motion using specialized software.
This session will include a short presentation on how the experience was implemented in a 3-day format, a discussion of the impact it has, a demonstration of some of the animatronics figures that were created and opportunities for session attendees to explore some of the materials and tools used.

(Almost) Paperless Special Education: Integrating Google Behind the Scenes
It’s not difficult to imagine why special education could be considered a triple edged sword --if one such existed. With each individualized student comes more time spent working with the children in the classroom, more time spent conferencing between specialized teachers, and the most cumbersome of all: more time spent on, what seems like, an endless supply of paperwork. What if one (free!) piece of internet software could help you spend more time virtually eliminate the latter two so that teachers could spend more time focusing on what is important: working with children in the classroom to overcome their disabilities? Come see how our school has taken the ʺpaperʺwork out of Special Education.

Share it Forward with Izza (Android)
Izza is a new Android app designed for educators and anyone else with a passion to share information. Izza makes it easy to share documents, apps, web sites, media, and much more - almost anything available on mobile platforms. Izza organizes the users content in an attractive “Netflix-style” user interface. These uniform, user-friendly environments (ʺIzzasʺ) are suitable for students of all ages. “Izzas” become ʺvirtual appsʺ, and can even be published as standalone apps on Google Play and the Amazon App Store. Absolutely no programming is required, and Izza is currently being tested by elementary through college age students.
Izza is not yet available on Google Play. Each participant will receive a coupon code for a free download of the product. Izza will be available on Google Play in the second quarter of 2014.

Students in communication courses must tackle the persuasive speech. Making the connection between the terminology and the effective use of a persuasive speech is simplified with the use of movies, YouTube clips, and computer applications found but seldom used in Word. Merging these three sources to form persuasive speech analysis group panels lead to greater understanding of the terminology and broad application of critical thinking.
